托福阅读中的句子简化题_托福

相信备考托福的同学们一定知道托福阅读中有一种叫句子简化题（Sentence Simplification）的题型。

句子简化题每篇文章最多一题，却非常耗时间，正确率也不是很高。不过，看完下面的文章，了解今天的主角“句子边界”之后，相信大家解答句子简化题会更加胸有成竹、得心应手。

句子边界

顾名思义，就是句子之间或者句子内部的分割点。因为托福阅读对句子简化题的考察只有一句话，所以我们主要讨论的是句子内部的边界。

我们首先来看下面这句话：

When two closely related individuals mate, their offspring are more likely to manifest genetic diseases than are the offspring of genetically unrelated individuals, and as a result, inbreeding tends to produce animals that are less likely to survive to adulthood and reproduce.

毫无疑问，这句话非常复杂，其原因就是句子内部的三个逗号把句子分成了四个部分：

When two closely related individuals mate；

Their offspring are more likely to manifest genetic diseases than are the offspring of genetically unrelated individuals；

And as a result；

Inbreeding tends to produce animals that are less likely to survive to adulthood and reproduce。

显然，（1）和（3）只是句子碎片，（2）和（4）才是可以独立存在的完整句子。

由此，我们可以说，逗号是句子内部的重要边界。借助逗号，很容易就能做出判断，高亮句子的重要信息（essential information）主要集中在（2）和（4）这两部分中。再进一步分析，（2）和（4）这两句话是不是地位相同，或者说都是同等重要的信息呢？答案当然是否定的。

根据“（3）and as a result”，我们知道（4）是（2）的结果，也就是说“Because （2）, （4）”。最后，高亮句子的重心就是（4）

第四部分“inbreeding tends to produce animals that are less likely to survive to adulthood and reproduce”才是我们要重点关注的信息。

我们来看这道题的四个选项：

A. When closely related individuals mate, their offspring are likely to manifest genetic diseases that will probably be passed on to the next generation.

B. Genetic diseases inherited from parents that are not related make it less likely that the affected offspring will survive to adulthood and reproduce.

C. When two related individuals mate, their offspring may survive to adulthood, but they are unlikely to reproduce.

D. There is a tendency for the offspring of closely related parents to have genetic diseases that make it less likely they will survive and reproduce.

微浏览一下四个选项，相信大家可以一眼看出只有B和D两个选项出现了（4）中的重要信息“less likely to survive to adulthood and reproduce”。B和D纵向对比一下，最明显的区别是B中说的是“not related”，而D中说的是“closely related”。这时候，只要看一下（1）中的“closely related”，我们就可以做出选择，D是正确答案

当然，需要说明的是，句子边界只是解答句子简化题的一个突破口。为了万无一失，在时间允许的情况下，还是建议大家先把高亮的句子完整读完，然后利用句子边界，识别出整句话中的最重要信息所在，最后利用排除法选出正确答案。
