Part 1 Gifts
How often do you buy other gifts?
Do you like to send expensive gifts?
What kinds of gifts are popular in your country?
Why do people send gifts?
社交 socialise with others
沟通方式 means of communication
支持,配合 be supportive of
安慰某人 console someone at times of sorrow
1. How often do you buy others gifts?
I often buy my friends gifts, things they say they like, things they might like, according to my knowledge of them, or things they need. I really like to give people gifts, or to be more specific, I like the feeling when I see them get surprised and excited. I mean, they are happy, and I am happy because they are happy, it’s just a great thing. It’s kind of the way my friends and I interact with each other, we would surprise each other with maybe a piece of favourite cake, some snack, a book or some other small stuff. We get to know each other more and it’s really a lot of fun.
I do not often give gifts to others, only on birthdays or other special occasions or holidays. Picking a gift for others can be really painful and difficult for me. It’s really hard, because there are so many things to consider. Would they like it? Is it something useful or just enjoyable? What if he or she already has it? Would it be awkward if it is too cheap or expensive? I mean, these things would drive me crazy! I prefer to show my affection in other ways, and the best thing is that, my friends can totally get me.
2. Do you like to send expensive gifts?
I would not purposely buy expensive gifts every time, but I would do so when I feel it is necessary or appropriate. I think the only standard gift selection is suitable. If it is suitable, then the price may not matter in some cases. If you think it would become some kind of pressure for the person you are going to give the present to, then maybe you can chip in for it with some other friends.
I do not like the idea of sending expensive gifts. When you give others gifts, you try to express your feelings or give your wishes. Sometimes the expensive ones are good, but sometimes they can really get us into trouble. When there is big difference between the prices, it becomes some kind of contest, where people happily or feel forced to raise their price over each other, and then things start to head south. I do not like that, so again, I would usually not give pricy presents.
3. What kinds of gifts are popular in your country?
I do not think there are special kinds of gifts that are always popular, because people really have very different tastes and needs. But if you have to ask, there are several things that are usually picked when giving presents. When we want to buy something for a man, we would think about maybe a watch, some electronic devices, a shaver, a lighter or perhaps shoes. And when it comes to women, we would think about all kinds of bags and shoes, because, you know, we can never get enough of those. Cosmetics and perfumes are good as well. And that’s about everything that I can come up with.
4. Why do people send gifts?
I think there are several reasons why people send others gifts, and sometimes they might overlap. When we want to convey our emotions without actually saying it, we might send gifts, and I think that is the most common scenario. What’s more, sometimes it is not proper to just give money or merely say thank you, so gift is a great way to express our gratitude.
