Youth crime is becoming an increasingly serious problem in the community. There are a variety of causes factoring into this issue and as such, viable solutions are dependent on situational knowledge and discretion. This essay will first outline the two most influential factors causing youth crime and then give suggestions on possible approaches to a solution.
Of all of the contributing factors to youth crime, two stand out as the most influential. Firstly, modern parenting techniques have seen a limited input from mothers and fathers into the control and instruction of their children’s behavior. This is clearly visible from a study done in 2015 of parents with children between 12 and 17 who were asked about supervision of their children in public areas such as aboard public transport and in supermarkets. Only 22% of surveyed parents said that they would tell their children to stop behavior that was socially unacceptable, such as swearing or putting feet on seats. Combined with the second most influential factor, the glorification of crime in pop culture, this results in a younger generation of teenagers who see wrong-doing as admirable and do not have the opposite idea reinforced by their parents.
The complexity of the issue of youth crime results in a situation which great discretion must be used in dealing with the problem. Any possible solutions must involve education, not only for the young people who are committing the crimes but also for their parents, who are the sole most important influence on children’s behavior. Similar solutions could be found in harsher restrictions on the content of media, such as television, film and video games that young people are accessing. For example, the rate of youth crime in Australia experienced a 17% increase in 2013 when the maturity rating of the violent video game, Grand Theft Auto, was reduced from 18 to 14 years of age. However, discretion must beused as each individual youth’s situation could differ immensely.
In conclusion, the complex nature of this issue and the multitude of possible causes means that in approaching any solution, there must be a focus on education of all parties involved and further revision of media content, however discretion is key to finding an answer.
